Video we watched at our Sunday morning service on 01/17/10
Imagine yourself in the worst crisis you have ever faced. Your spouse is dead, one of your children is missing, the others are crying uncontrollably, and the screams for rescue from the rubble are filling the air . . . your head is spinning in confusion and anguish and . . .
You need help like you have never needed it before, yes medical aid and nourishment, but is that all you need? You hear help is on the way, but what about guidance? Counsel? Comfort? Hope cannot come in a box or a bottle . . . Guidance so sorely needed this second will not come from the government.
Relief is measured in millions and masses, but pain and anguish is experienced solo and expressed as a soliloquy. Will we have a funeral? Will someone come to pray with me and hold my hand? Yes, our church will come . . . the pastor will call, an elder will visit . . .
Our Elders are consumed with their own catastrophe, our house of worship is in ruins. Our church, the center of life and worship, the source of our comfort and strength, the access to what we need when we need it . . . at the worst possible moment, our church has been wiped out, too . . .
The roads will be repaired, the hospitals rebuilt, the schools will open again . . . in time . . . but who will help my church? Will it ever exist again?
Galatians 6:10 says, “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
So Pastor Mark Driscoll and Pastor James McDonald are one their way right now with an initial delivery of 1,000 pounds of relief supplies. They are going to go there and particularly assess the state of the churches and serve those gospel ministries who are helping meet both people’s physical needs along with the spiritual needs. They also took a small filmmaking crew from Mars Hill Church to document what’s going on in order to create a video to bring back and help solicit support.
