Grace in the Midst of the Unexpected
Some weeks are just messy and worse than others and that’s the way life goes. Somebody recently said to me that it seems God must work extra hard at Christmas time because it is often one of the roughest times for people. Maybe that is so. Our God definitely determines the seasons of weather we experience and perhaps a similar principle applies to there being seasons when God’s grace is especially active for us. This is my story of God’s grace in a slew of the unexpected last week.
As we approach Christmas and the ensuing end of another year, I had made plans to go away on a solo camping trip. I wanted to get away from the noise and regularity of the city in order to be alone with God and seek out his strength and vision for the coming year in regards to the life and direction of The Resolved Church. So I decided to hike up into the San Bernardino Mountains through the Azusa Canyon 6.5 miles in to the West fork of the San Gabriel River.
Advent – Week 4 | The Angels Candle: Peace
This is the fourth week of Advent, the Angels Candle dealing with the theme of joy. This year’s text is Luke 1:26-38 and deals with the subjects of the name of Jesus, the title Son of God, and the kingship of Jesus who brings peace. This sermon was originally preached December 21st, 2008 at The Resolved Church in San Diego, CA.
Additional PM Service 12/21/08 – Candlelight, Carols, the Christmas Story, and Communion
This Sunday on 12/21/08 we are having a PM Candlelight service in addition to our normal morning service.
The evening service will be short and consist of:
- Everyone having their own candle to hold while we sing some Carols.
- Ron Broersma and Pastor Duane will read the Christmas story from the Bible.
- Partaking of communion.

Advent – Week 3 | The Shepherds Candle: Joy
This is the third week of Advent, the Shepherds Candle dealing with the theme of joy. This year’s text is Luke 2:8-20 and deals with the subjects of the nature of shepherds, angels, fear, and the joy Jesus brings. This sermon was originally preached December 14th, 2008 at The Resolved Church in San Diego, CA.
I Baptized My Daughter
So this last Sunday I baptized my thirteen month old baby daughter, Adina. This was a significant and difficult step for me theologically, since this was not the practice of the church I grew up in. Paedobaptism (child baptism) is an area of theology where there is quite a bit of disagreement/division within the Evangelical realm of Jesus’ church. Below is essential the text of what I said about my daughter’s baptism and the reasons why my wife and chose to have her baptized.

This series covers our study through the book of Romans.
