Gospel & Culture
Blog | Sean Hutchinson | The Gospel’s Redemptive Work In Culture
We recently had our first LampPost Cafe and the premiere was an amazing night of music, coffee, and community. We had over 60 people come out, most of which were not from the church, and everyone walked away with a similar sense of a buzz in the air. A buzz that something special had just happened.
Annabelle’s Coffee Co. set up a full espresso bar in the kitchen area. Alongside, my good friend Kristen Tencer baked home-made scones and sold them with her famous devonshire cream. A few of our own from the Resolved showed up early and set up furniture transforming the bland music hall into a warm and welcoming living room and cafe. Rheanna Downey opened the night with a jazzy, soulful, singer/songwriter set on acoustic guitar. The Shantyannes finished the evening with a 40 minute set of pirate rockin’, saloon shaking, piano driven rock. They take their inspiration from a fictional story of sojourners at sea and add an almost theatrical experience to the music. It truly was a great premiere, and it will only get better from here.
You may ask, what does this have to do with The Resolved church or Jesus’ church in general? The answer: Gospel Mission. We are a church that believes in Mission, not just to foreign nations but to our beautiful city of San Diego. And what is our mission? The Gospel! To live out the great commission of Jesus by making disciples through lives that reflect and preach the Gospel of redemption and salvation. For the LampPost Cafe this doesn’t happen from the stage or the pulpit, but rather through the Church engaging in culture, being the light of the world, a city within our city, a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. After all, Jesus said we are “the light of the world, the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13-14).
What Is Reformed?

Every year, October 31st is Reformation Day…which is a big deal for those who consider themselves part of the Reformed tradition like us at The Resolved Church. So what is it to be reformed and what is the Reformation?
Jesus Dismantles Disqualified Leadership (Pt 1)

Matthew Series | Matthew 22:15-46 | Pastor Duane Smets
This week is an exegetical sermon on Matthew 22:15-46 where the religious leaders bring a final assault on Jesus before they arrest him. The assault comes in three different waves questioning Jesus on taxes, life after death and the relevance of the Bible. In each case Jesus dismantles their argument and redirects the focus onto God and mankind’s need for him. This sermon was originally preached on October 10th, 2010 at The Resolved Church in San Diego, CA.
Dressing Up Like A Shepherd
Blog | Pastor Duane Smets
Not too long ago my wife and I discovered that my daughter has an amazing ability to memorize things and act like she is reading even though she is only three years old. She is particularly good at memorizing Scripture…which delighted me at first, so I just started heaping up the verses and before we knew it she had like 10 verses memorized word for word. Then one night as we were “read” one her verses, perfectly quoting Genesis 1:1 word for word I asked her, “What’s that mean?” She happily and promptly replied, “I don’t know.”
So we’ve been slowing things down a bit and trying to work on the meanings of the passages she knows. Tonight we were working on Psalm 23:1 “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.” So I dressed her up like a shepherd in a robe and gave her a stick as a staff and I covered myself up in a white sheet to look like a sheep, made a bunch of “baa” sounds and let her lead me around the house. Then we switched places and I shepherded her around for awhile. As we were playing she asked me, “Where are we going shepherd?” I said, “For a walk, isn’t it fun to follow the shepherd?” And she replied, “Yeah! Can we do this again tomorrow Daddy?”
Connect With Cobblestone
What is Cobblestone?
Cobblestone is The Resolved Church’s online utility for connecting and communicating with one another. It functions as our church directory, a site for event & activity announcements, community group communications, the posting of prayer requests/praises and other needs, as well as a in house place for photo galleries, discussion forums and contacting and conversing with our pastors.
Why Cobblestone?
Not only is it cool, like having our own personal Facebook just for the church…but there’s also a distinct ecclesiological (church) and missional (outreach) purpose to it. We are growing as a church and as we continue to grow we face of a challenge of staying connected with one another and bringing new people in. We see Cobblestone as key utility to help us assimilate new people into our midst as well as a great tool to help us to continue to be the church be involved in each others lives. It’s an easy to use platform and can be utilized for all kinds of stuff.
How to get in?
There are a couple ways you can get in. One, you can be invited in by your community group leader or a pastor. Two, you can fill out a request form for access. This ensures the privacy of people’s personal information and that it’s only people who are actually connected with our church who are getting in. Cobblestone Request Form

The Gospel of El Elyon
Church Planter Intern | Alan Giles | Genesis 14:1-24
This week is a sermon on Genesis 14 where where we see the Gospel of God Most High as it is revealed through the life and actions of Abram. The story that we followed revealed to us some of the idols of our hearts and ways in which we have bowed to gods other than God Most High. This sermon was originally preached on October 3rd, 2010 at The Resolved Church in San Diego, CA.
Purging The Pugnacious Planter
Blog | Pastor Duane Smets
I spent the week up in Seattle, WA at Mars Hill Church for the Acts 29 Boot Camp where I was serving the network in assessing guys who are applying to Acts 29 because they believe God may have called them to plant a church. I’ve been doing assessments for a few years now and inevitably in conversation after conversation I end up sharing some of my experience as a planter as I listen to men who are full of many of the same foolish aspirations and ideas that once plagued and entrapped me. Perhaps some of my story may preserve and protect a few from the falling into the trap of thinking anyone can plant a church but Jesus.
Jesus Asserts The Authority Of Heaven

Matthew Series | Matthew 21:18-22:14 | Pastor Duane Smets
This week is an exegetical sermon on Matthew 21:18-22:14 where Jesus assumes and exercises divine authority and action in five different scenes moving hearers to question their own allegiance to Jesus versus their own self-righteousness. These scenes include the cursing of the fig tree, Jesus’ response to the chief priests’ interrogation, and three parables Jesus uses to respond to and challenge them. This sermon was originally preached on September 26th, 2010 at The Resolved Church in San Diego, CA.
