Us Versus Them Versus Following Jesus
So much of our language as Christians can easily degenerate into “us vs. them” language… Christians vs. Non-Christians, Believers vs. Non-Believers, Sinner vs. Saint, the good guys and the bad guys. It automatically puts both any discussion of Jesus or person who is considering Jesus in a place of conflict. “Versus” language immediately sets up a fight and calls the other person to defend without even allowing an opportunity for Jesus to first shine. Interestingly, before Christians were first called Christians (Acts 11:26), they were called followers of “The Way (Acts 9:2).” In Jesus’ ministry from beginning to end, he called out saying, “Follow me.” It was an invitation into a discipleship relationship with Jesus.
