Jesus Deals With The Motivations Of Followers

Matthew Series | Matthew 19:16-20:34 | Pastor Duane Smets
This week is an exegetical sermon on Matthew 19:16-20:34 where Jesus talks with a rich man who is blinded by his possessions, his disciples who are blinded by their reward, his family who is blinded by their potential for power and two blind men who cry out for mercy and see Jesus. In each case Jesus addresses the wrong motivations of followers whether it be for possessions, pay, and power which blind us from seeing our true need. This sermon was originally preached on September 12th, 2010 at The Resolved Church in San Diego, CA.

We see regular sacrificial giving of our hard earned money both as an act of worship from the heart and a joyful responsibility of the gospel for those who are a part of Jesus’ church (Prov 3:9; 1 Cor 9:13-14; 2 Cor 9:1-15; 1 Tim 5:17-18). We thank those who have helped us meet the needs of The Resolved Church and pray its members will continue to join us in faithful, consistent, Godly giving as Scripture instructs. To read more about how we see the role of money as it relates to us as Christians and to how Jesus means for it to function in a church see: A Brief Theology of Finances

I Own Nothing
The two biggest topics these days heard amongst coffee house clatter, dinner discussions, and neighborly jabbing is undoubtedly the coming elections and the current financial state of the economy in the great United States of America. Two weeks ago on Sunday morning, in studying Romans 13, we learned the only true government we belong to as Christians is the Kingdom of God, where Jesus rules as King. Last week, we learned how that effects the currency we use to live…our money. This week’s journal entry is devoted to helping us think more Biblically about our finances.
